During the course of working life, job stress is a common cause of reduced functioning. Job stress incorporates for example communication difficulties, high expectations of achievement, demands om working capacity and speed, handling conflict and crises, or a bad working environment. Job stress may affect both leaders and employees, and result in sick leave, burn out or psychological disorders.

In Norway, one-fourth of all sick leaves are the result of minor psychological problems or more severe mental disorders. An effective way of reducing the number of sick leaves in an organization is to focus on coping with job-related stress. The earlier we start addressing the problem, the sooner we can expect increased well-being and better workplace performance.
